I always approach Eagle Creek with high hopes and then my reality sets in! But others soared above all the tricks and turns of the course, didn’t let the heat get to them, scored well and won! The course conditions were great and the starter did remark at the end of the round how much they enjoy having us and would love to have us back. (Note for next season) So congrats to all for keeping up the pace and treating the course with care.
And we had all new winners in each flight except for Martha Noble, who doubled down and shot low gross and net in her flight! Well done. Martha is new to OWGA and has gotten past the typical first year curse by having a real commitment to improving her game. She credits that and the good environment of OWGA (good people, good competition) to building her confidence and giving her the can do attitude!
Sharon Baerenklau took first net in a very competitive first flight. Now Sharon has a lot of experience winning, having won the Championship several times! Her putting gave her some good scores, calmed her down and led to great play. And, for those of you who don’t know Sharon that well, those of us that do use the expression when we are in trouble WWSD?(What Would Sharon Do?) She is willing to take her medicine when needed and manages a course better than anyone I know – thus, all those championships! Sharon also gave kudos to her group for having a good time and taking measures to keep up if they fell behind. Like a lot of us, when she rushes, she doesn’t play as well. So, the group broke up, to keep up…..and for any skeptics, it worked! They got back together in a few holes and finished out as a well paced foursome! See, we were listening at opening day, Janet!
We also had other first time winners for the season. Maria Kovalenko, tied Susie Keane for first in the first flight and won in a tie breaker! Lisa Robinson won second flight gross and Sonia Fredrick won second flight net. Lyn Aubrey shot low gross and net in the fourth flight.
The fact that the winners varied from our first event tells the story about how competitive OWGA really is! Keep your head down at Hawks Landing and you too could be getting a call for next weeks article!
