We’ve Come A Long Way…….

  • Founded in 1927 with approximately 20 members from Dubsdread Country Club and The Country Club of Orlando. (It was reported that the men did not want the ladies on the courses, but that did not stop the group!)
  • In the 1930’s and 1940’s play was suspended for 5 years so members could volunteer in support of the war effort.
  • In the 1950’s, OWGA was responsible for the sale of tickets to the National Mixed Two-Ball Championships at Dubsdread. Money from these ticket sales then went on to fund the Florida Women’s State Tournament.
  • In the 1990’s the number of membership clubs grew to 28 and there are now more than 36 member clubs in OWGA.
  • The Championship Trophy was renamed the Peggy Brass Championship Trophy in 2012 to honor the accomplishments of longtime, well-deserved member Peggy Brass. These accomplishments include 50 years a member, 25 Championship wins, 2 Handicap Championship wins and even 2 Most Improved!
  • For Over 20 years, the competing handicap index has been 18.9. Making OWGA the place for better golfers to find good competition and good friendship!
  • The camaraderie of the first years of the organization continues today. New members are sponsored and are helped throughout their first year to get the most out of the organization. The commitment made by each member to play and attend meetings has been a long time distinguishing feature of OWGA and has created the environment that encourages new friendships.
